Shoulda Been Monday but is actually not Monday musings: Does Size Matter? Part 2

Summer is here. I have a new laptop. And there are no longer excuses for not posting. So here we go. Part 2 of does size matter?

Catagory #2: #NOTSIZETHATCOUNTSIT'SHOWYOUUSEIT! or for short How You Use it. Yes, we are hashtaggin it up here at Boanerges. But regardless, this category is basically the exact opposite of The Viking Epic which instead of using a really long arc to build characters and almost always being based off a manga, the How You Use It category is almost never based off of a manga, and are usually short and sweet, or short and awful. Take your pick. Anime that would fall under this category would be just about anything that is one season long. In some Instances it is a really good anime like Trigun or Cowboy Bebop, or in some instances it is because it was awful and couldn't get any more seasons. Like School Days.

So Basically this is a category of the unknown. When a new original anime (or manga I suppose) comes out, it might end up an instant classic like Cowboy Bebop, or it may be a big steaming pile of fresh poop. The positives of this size is that it is easy to watch, because instead of months of committed marathoning, it takes just a few sittings. Because of that, this is almost always where you want to start with someone who is new to anime. The biggest and most glaring problem is quite obvious though, the fact that it isn't very long, in some cases the anime can't get everything done that it wants to in the allotted time. Like less character development and such. If One Piece ended after the Zoro arc we would be like "Man that Luffy and Zoro were quite a cool combo. Too bad we couldn't see them fleshed out more." (wish granted) Basically there is less room for error in the shorter time span, so the "HOWYOUUSEIT" is very deliberate. If the time is used well, it can be amazing. If used poorly the anime will suffer as well.

There is one major complaint I have here however. Why are some of the best shows here? Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Angel Beats (one of my favs at least, I know most didn't like it as much as me), or Gosick. These series that are so good, only get one season. When they finish all I want is more of them. The obvious answer is "Yeah we said that about Darker Than Black and that worked out so well." And yes, we do not speak of season 2 of Darker Than Black, but just because it was bad doesn't make the first season any worse. Shinichirō Watanabe (main man behind Cowboy Bebop) said that originally they didn't really plan on Cowboy Bebop being just the one season, but they never have made any more because he thinks the fans would kill him. Basically is the idea that the first season had great closure (in fact GOAT closure) and that if another season didn't live up to the first that it would just break something that isn't broken. I say who gives a crap, my feelings on the new Star Wars movies are the same, even if they are not that good, more Star Wars is better than no Star Wars. As a for instance, a 3rd season of Darker Than Black was announced, and it is supposed to be a prequel (i think) just because season 2 was awful doesn't mean that I am not excited for a 3rd one. If it is even close to as enjoyable as the first one it will be a blast. So basically, I think they should make more seasons of shows like Cowboy Bebop and Trigun and Gosick. Not doing it because you are afraid of not living up to the original is just stupid. Another season of any of these would probably not be as good as the original, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't be good. Just because the Berserk movies are not as good as the manga, doesn't mean it hasn't been a ton of fun watching it all in modern animation and whatnot. Even if there is to much CG. Just sort of my opinion, in the words of one of the worst presidents ever "The only thing we have to fear, is fear itself."
See you later, and there will be at least one more creatively named category coming.
Until then,

 Manere Sitiem amicus.
